LONG ANSWER: That's us in the photo. We met as students at Lancaster University and we are now married (to each other). For many years Juliet had a career as a computer analyst/programmer and Alan in education.
We now work full-time developing creative projects and designing websites. We are currently in Durham up in the wonderful north east of England.
LONG ANSWER: The Tempest is Alan's favourite Shakespeare play. He had a walk-on part in a professional production - wearing a gorilla costume - in 1981. In 2006-2007 he collaborated with the RSC creating paintings based on the play (detail of "Spell-stopped" left).
SEBASTIAN: Ha, ha! What things are these, my lord Antonio? Will money buy 'em?
ANTONIO: Very like. One of them is a plain fish and no doubt marketable.
LONG ANSWER: Our prices for completely bespoke websites are very competitive and are based on the estimated number of hours needed to complete the many detailed tasks involved. When we have a clear understanding of your site requirements we will present you with a detailed proposal and final price. If you are happy to proceed we will agree a timetable and begin the process of developing your website (see below).
We can sometimes arrange for payment to be made in two instalments - please ask.
LONG ANSWER: We focus on YOU - who you are, what you do, what your business is, what your experience is, what your ambitions are, your likes, your dislikes. One client commented: "I did envisage that there would be a lot to do and think about ... it's a bit like psychoanalysis!" Most importantly we help you to identify your needs and the best way to project your image on the web.
With that established, and a single individual nominated by you to liaise with us and make decisions, we design and build your site. The process is enjoyable, creative and helps consolidate your business identity. At each stage we keep you informed of progress, and before sending your site live make sure every detail is taken care of (including instructions on how to use the CMS if you have chosen to update your site yourself).
LONG ANSWER: In our experience there is a happy medium between maintaining a project's momentum and allowing time for reflection and decision-making. Because the process is collaborative it is best for clients to be available throughout site development to avoid interruptions to the creative flow.
LONG ANSWER: We use a Content Management System (CMS) to build our sites. A CMS allows clients to make changes to the site after it has gone live. The CMS we have chosen has an easy to use admin panel and allows us complete creative freedom - the CMS is integrated into the site rather than the other way around. We never use 'themes' or 'templates'.
LONG ANSWER: Nobody can guarantee you will reach number one in the organic search engine results. Google (which dominates with two thirds of all internet searches) has a complex, secret and ever-changing search algorithm - the objective of which is to serve a set of results which are relevant to the search query and from trusted and good quality sites. The sites we have built perform well in search results and performance tends to improve with age.
When your site has gone live you can continue working on inbound links from relevant and good quality sites. You can enhance your web presence through social media, guest blogging and articles - and don't forget to promote your website through traditional media.
LONG ANSWER: Alan is an artist and experienced photographer. Juliet has expertise in working with graphics software. We can assist with photography and graphic images. Our photographic work can be seen on dorneylake.co.uk, fsmh.org.uk, thefinchesbedandbreakfast.co.uk and cannoncounselling.co.uk.
Examples of photographs and graphics appear on this site and our other personal websites.
LONG ANSWER: We are happy to help with writing copy, proof-reading copy provided by you or making suggestions about how to enhance your web presence with the power of words (including how to ensure your copy maximizes your search engine visibility). Juliet is an English graduate and Alan has tutored Creative Writing and Poetry for many years.
LONG ANSWER: An email address (or addresses) associated with your domain name (e.g. firstname.lastname@example.org) has a more professional appearance to site visitors and is preferable to using a personal email address (e.g. email@example.com).
If preferred, all mail sent to the email address associated with your domain can be forwarded to your personal email address.
LONG ANSWER: If you have time to devote to social media it can be an effective way to enhance your web presence and can drive visitors to your site. We can include attractive icon links or, if available, we can embed social media widgets (e.g. Twitter timeline).
LONG ANSWER: Ideally you will provide us with the final cuts in the correct format for us to use on your website, although we can edit if necessary. We recommend uploading the video to YouTube (or Vimeo if you prefer) and embedding the video on your website. Using a third party to host and deliver your video ensures ongoing cross-platform compatibility.
We can install an audio player on your website; we will find the most appropriate player for your requirements.
LONG ANSWER: Depending on the complexity of your requirements, the provision of a logo can be included in our quoted price. Often a simple text-based logo works very well for a website banner or on printed stationery.
LONG ANSWER: We ask for a 25% payment on acceptance of the quoted price for development of the site and will not invoice for the remainder until you are completely satisfied and the site has gone live.
LONG ANSWER: If you have seen a feature on another website that you think would work well for you, such as an image gallery, slider or image magnifier (see left), we can install something similar on your site. LONG ANSWER: We install Google Analytics which provides a huge range of information on visits to your website.

LONG ANSWER: The W3C is an international community, led by Tim Berners-Lee (inventor of the web), working to develop standards and guidance for the web. In a fast changing environment the W3C is a useful source of reference. We ensure that our code passes W3C validation. This is one factor which helps to ensure maximum cross-browser compatibility for your website.
LONG ANSWER: The favourite icon or favicon is shown in the browser tab along with the page title and also next to a website when it is bookmarked. A favicon can act as a strong visual reinforcement to your identity and is just one of the small details that combine to give your site a professional and polished finish.
LONG ANSWER: You will have come across broken links many times - otherwise known as a 404 or not found error. If a custom 404 page does not exist you will typically be shown a default page from the web host - see left. We always create a custom 404 page showing the site's navigation links to ensure that visitors don't go astray.
